A
Reason to Hope. A Means to Cope.
Nathan
Nathan's gentle
manner, warm smile and dancing green eyes portray a young man with
spirit, intelligence, sensitivity and personal goals. Nathan has
schizophrenia, and challenges our mistaken beliefs about the illness.
All too often,
the stigma surrounding schizophrenia is built on people's negative
perception about the character and capabilities of those with the
disease. But stigma is damaging, and the Schizophrenia Society of
Ontario (SSO) is working to ensure the facts are known about this
serious but treatable disease.
During Nathan's
final year of high school his family first approached the SSO. Thanks
to early treatment and his pro-active participation in his own recovery,
Nathan has fared remarkably well. Among his many talents, Nathan
is an accomplished violinist who plays with the Oakville Symphony
Orchestra and performs at local parties and events. Nathan's mother,
Mary Lou, told us that even during the onset of Nathan's illness,
his talent for the violin and dedication to playing persistedas
if it were an anchor.
SSO helps
individuals like Nathan identify the early signs of psychosis and
to seek timely treatment so they gain hope in their recovery journey.
With effective treatment and medication, and the understanding and
support of friends, family and the community, Nathan is a living
example that having schizophrenia doesn't limit the opportunity
for a full and productive life.
