An emergency is defined as a condition that may result in death, permanent disability or severe pain.

A recent survey asked what constituted a medical emergency. These are the results:
  • 96% of health care workers and 99% of patients called severe chest pain an emergency;
  • 94% of the health care workers and 99% of patients thought severe abdominal pain was an emergency;
  • 78% of health care professionals and 98% of patients felt that difficulty breathing was an emergency;
  • only 58% of health care workers called severe headache an emergency, while 91% of the patients did.
