Health Tip

A sore throat may be the result of infection.

A sore throat, particularly in a child, should be taken seriously, since it might be caused by strep bacteria. Symptoms will usually include fever, headache, and sore throat. It is difficult to diagnose strep throat on the basis of appearance, so a throat swab is usually taken and examined for the presence of this bacteria. Because the complications of strep throat can be very serious, you should discuss with your child's doctor what action should be taken when your child complains to you about a sore throat.
